Teknologiat ja materiaalit kasvun mahdollistajina

Technologies and materials as enablers of growth

In North Karelia, technologies and materials represent a corporately driven entity that focuses on the technology industry. The expertise of business life is complemented by the University of Eastern Finland’s natural science departments, the engineering-related educational expertise of Karelia University of Applied Sciences, and vocational education and training provider Riveria, as well as a number of research and testing environments in the region.

Important international partnership networks for our region are the so-called smart specialisation platforms. Active participation in various networks promotes the awareness of North Karelia and makes the actors an attractive partner at the international level.

Precision engineering is utilized in the design and manufacture of complex products, machines, tools, and instruments when parts must be exactly the right size and shape. It is used when particularly accurate measurements are required, or the surface quality must be carried out to the utmost precision. Precision engineering is used to manufacture and test elements of all sizes.

In North Karelia, our special expertise in precision engineering serves especially the plastics and metals industry. Precision engineering is utilized in, for example, forestry machines, locking devices, optics, plastic products as well as measuring and diagnostic devices. Precision engineering services include e.g. energy-efficient lighting solutions, high-speed and nano-precision machining, and various measurement technologies.

Our expertise

Our areas of expertise include precision engineering in the manufacture of optical and mechanical components.

Our RDI experts

Karelia University of Applied Sciences' precision technology laboratory in Joensuu is unique in terms of machines and equipment. Precision machining equipment is used to manufacture optical and mechanical components in close cooperation with Finnish and international companies for the needs of both scientific research and industry. The laboratory is utilized in R&D, training and education.

Our networks

  • Public–Private Partnership (PPP) between companies and training organisations in the area
  • Applied research cooperation between the local universities in the field of photonics and materials technologies

The Finnish extractive industry has its roots in Outokumpu, North Karelia. Our Outokumpu Mining Camp, an international centre of expertise, provides services to the mining industry. At the core of our expertise is GTK Mintec in Outokumpu and its unique services: the mineral processing pilot plant and its laboratories.

The main purpose of the pilot plant and its laboratories is to develop innovations for mineral grinding and beneficiation processes and to provide research services for different industries. The most important customers of the unit come from the mining, chemistry and metal industries. GTK Mintec provides services for the entire mineral production process.

GTK Mintec also assists in developing key solutions for the circular economy. The processes used to extract minerals from ore can be used in the remediation of contaminated soil and separating recyclable metals from industrial slag, for example. Ecological aspects are a central part of the research operations, and the environment is taken into account throughout the processes.

Our expertise

Our areas of expertise include analytics and processing that serve the stone and extractive sector as well as the circular economy.
