Description of educational structure


Training organisations, research activities and centres of expertise form the intellectual capital base of North Karelia. North Karelia is a remarkable educator region and education is one of the region`s central pulling forces. The comprehensiveness, quality and diversity of the educational supply of the region are strong and competitive also in a nation-wide context.

Secondary education is provided by the region in 17 upper-secondary schools and 8 vocational institutions. Vocational adult education is offered by the North Karelia Educational Federation of Municipalities. Higher levels of education are represented by the University of Joensuu and the North Karelia Universities of Applied Sciences, the latter offering Vocational Teacher Education. Humanistic University of Applied Sciences offers degrees in culture, youth work and in social education. Preparatory, rehabilitation and vocational training is provided by the Kaprakka Centre of Vocational Education.

 

The University of Joensuu was established in 1969. It includes six faculties and nine independent units. The University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight different fields: education, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, economics, forestry, theology and psychology. The University has campuses in Joensuu and Savonlinna. The University`s Mekrijärvi Research Station is located in Ilomantsi. The University has over 7.200 students, 1.200 of whom are on the Savonlinna campus. Every year approximately 1.300 new students are admitted. The staff comprises about 1.200 people, of whom 130 work on the Savonlinna campus.

 

The University of Joensuu, North Karelia University of Applied Sciences and the secondary training institutions of the North Karelia Educational Federation of Municipalities receive annually 750 exchange students and correspondingly about 700 local students go abroad every year. Approximately 200 foreign students are completing their degrees in North Karelia. Annually about 230 North Karelian educators go abroad as visiting lecturers for different periods of time, while North Karelian educational institutions receive about 170 visiting foreign teachers per year.
